WhatIWore: Ok, this is random, but yesterday I was walking towards campus (I camped out at the Starbucks across from the law school that morning) and I was thinking about my own college experience. For example, people memorized dorm phone numbers freshman year because hardly anyone had cell phones. Facebook didn’t come out until my junior year! And because social media hadn’t really been fully realized like it is today, the one place you could share your favorite song lyrics in italicized purple fonts was the away message. Who’s with me? Anyone?!

This outfit is an updated copy of something from years ago. I had to put this dress away when I was frequently nursing, but now it’s great for a morning out. I love that a vintage piece like this can still look super modern… likely because today’s designers copy vintage all the time!

When: October 6, 2015

What:
Shades: Karen Walker ‘Super Duper’ in crazy tort
Dress: Vintage, similar in black here)
Jacket: Old Navy (similar here)
Belt: thrifted
Boots: Ugg Austrailia

Where: Coffee Shop work session

I also have to talk about these boots… they are SO comfortable. There was no “wearing in” phase and the toe has the soft sherling lining you’d find in traditional UGG boots. They’re really great, guys!

WhatIWore: People! It’s tights weather!!! I knew when I wore this jacket and dress together that I’d definitely pair them up with black tights and booties when the time was right. Today is that day!

Now that I’ve got much darker hair I feel a little… intimidating? Edgy? Two vigourous shampoos later (one with baking soda to try to pull out more color) and I still feel a little like I’m wearing someone else’s hair. Like I need to be wearing brass knuckles or something?! I just don’t feel like I look… sweet? To counter that, bring on the pale pink and ruffles! I also feel like the black legs balance out the very dark brown hair a tad too. The good news is that a) it’s just hair and b) it’s a fun challenge to work with something different for a while. It is, however, the last time I will go this dark (and it was only one shade darker than I normally go!!)

When: October 4, 2015

What:
Shades: Karen Walker ‘Super Duper’
Pink Printed Ruffle Dress: Banana Republic (now on sale)
Jacket: Banana Republic
Ring: Old Navy, via gift card
Tights: We Love Colors
Booties: Rag + Bone

Since we’re in tights season… here’s a tip: Look on the package for ‘denier’ and try to find the highest possible number (I usually aim for 80, sometimes you can find 120). Also consider going a size up if up want really dark, opaque looking tights. I routinely by the L/XL for my height as well. I also know some gals swear by fleece lined tights for warmth and opacity!

WhatIWore: A chill is in the air! It’s fall, baby! Over the weekend, Adam helped our friends build a playset in the backyard while the wives and kids had hot apple cider and played indoors. Felix spent no less than 7 hours vacuuming.

Here’s what I wore for the day. I layered a new ultra cozy sweater over a tee shirt and chambray and paired that with a pair of cords and a hand knitted hat. And if you’re wondering if my hair looks dark - indeed it does! A little too dark - my hair soaked up the dye pretty intensely at the salon last week! I know it’ll lighten up over the coming weeks and I wanted a change for fall… but it’s going to take some getting used to!

When: October 3, 2015

What:
Hat: Self Made (details here)
Shades: Karen Walker ‘Super Duper’ in crazy tort
Chambray: J.Crew
Sweater: Old Navy, via gift card
Broach: Vintage
High Rise Flared Cords: J.Brand
Boots: LL Bean Signautre (old)

Where: Hanging at our friend’s house

In these early fall days I like to keep my windows open and get as much fresh air in the house as possible, which means I cuddle myself into a nest of blankets on the couch. I love blankets! I can’t sleep without “covers”… so the idea of wearing a cozy blanket like sweater is perfect for me.  This one has a lot of volume, so I used my old broach trick in back to give it a more fitted appearance from the front. These cords are a four years old, but I love that they’re in style now too! (see similar here).

Watch This | Iris

Iris Documentary

WhatIWore: Rainy Sunday on your hands? Love documentaries and fashion? If so, you will LOVE this new release on Netflix - Iris, directed by Albert Maysles (of Grey Gardens fame). I watched it the other night and was so absolutely inspired. Some of you may recognize Iris Apfel, a women known for her unique sense of style, but the film offers a glimpse into how she creates her signature look and about her marriage and career as an interior decorator and fabric designer.

Watching this made me want to have more fun getting dressed! To throw on an extra bracelet (or two, or ten)! To wear my giant sunglasses and funky pattern prints! I love it when a film gets my wheels turning! I think you’ll enjoy it too!
