WhatIWore: Y’all know I love my denim. Whether it’s a pair of jeans, a jacket or a chambray shirt or dress - my closet is packed with it (see my core closet here). Today I’m going as simple as it gets - a light weight chambray popover dress that I bought years ago when I lived in Brooklyn. I keep it in my closet year round, but it gets the most play in the spring and summer months. I especially like wearing it with something that has a bold handcrafted look (like this belt way back in 2011).  Just the other day I saw a big feature on what they call ‘global eclectic’ while online window shopping (links above) and it made me think of this piece (which I bought at a boutique in Asheville a couple of years ago. So today I’m wear what I think is a perfect mix of basic plus bold.

52 Thoughts | What the Cuss?

Curse Words, Cursing, Cussing, What the Cuss?

When I was in fourth of fifth grade, I remember hanging out during recess with a group of my little friends. We asked each other what we’d be willing to say or do if we were the lead actress in a movie.

“Would you smoke a cigarette?”…. “Would you say the F word??”

We all nodded out heads in solidarity and agreed that under absolutely no circumstances would any of use ever smoke or curse. While I’ve still never smoked a cigarette (really!) I have dropped plenty of F-bombs. I don’t curse like a sailor, but I do pepper my speech offline with a cuss here or there. Usually “Oh hell!” or “Sh*t!!!”

Now that Felix is a parrot, I’m really working hard to correct those. He has repeated me saying “Shoot!” so it’s only a matter of time if I keep it up. My toddler repeats things like “pool! park! ball! hat!” repetitively and there’s no way I want him marching around the house saying “shit! shit! shit!”

The reason I sat down to write this post is actually because of what I heard all afternoon long. I was at Little 5, which is a huge bike race at Indiana University and it’s amazing and I love it and Felix had such a great time. It was awesome. But I kept hearing people screaming the F word left and right. And it was coming out of the mouths of babes (college kids… who seem like children to me!) and it just felt… gross? But like I said above… I cuss too!

Maybe it’s because I have my own son or maybe it’s because I was sober (and a lot of attendees are not), I just felt like hearing the mother of all curse words in public makes me never want to say the F word again.

UPDATE: As a lot of parents jump into this conversation, I think it’s also worth bringing up that I never heard curse words in my home growing up. I don’t think I’ve EVER heard either of my parents use the F-word, and I’m really greatful for their example. One time my dad did say he was “pissed” and then apologized for the language to me (I was maybe… 10?) There are just some things that children should not be exposed until they can understand. That said, we’re not saints or uptight parents either - it’s just that I relish my son’s innocence and I want to protect it while he’s small. Eventually he’ll learn these words and we can explain them, but not yet.

Part of it might also be seeing something about myself that I don’t like and it taking the example of a pretty young girl, by all means probably a very respectable woman, shouting obscenities, for me to realize my own fault. We’re all kind of blind to the things we need to change in ourselves. More often than not the things that bother me about others that are my own greatest opportunites for change and self growth.

Am I done cursing forever? Probably not. Trust me. When I stub my toe or burn a pie, I will most definitely mutter colorful language under my breath. But I’m going to try very hard to clean up my language (even though it’s not that bad!)

I realize I don’t talk like this online, so you might have never thought I’d bring up a post like this. But I’m curious… do you curse? Never? Sometimes? Left and Right?

WhatIWore: So if you stop by and read this blog (or my social media) regularly, you’ll know I’ve had a slight obsessed with cool for the past week or so (or my lack of being cool). Two things: firstly, my students last semester told me that cool isn’t a good descriptive term anymore. The youngins aren’t saying cool. So by saying it constantly in the last week, I lose a lot of points for coolness. Whatever, Generation iPhone! I AM COOL. Secondly, I’ve been really digging my new do and sunglasses and they’ve given me the boost in confidence to just wear whatever the hell I want. I go through phases where I just need a little push to get my self esteem in motion.

Thirdly (a bonus!) I think black concert tee shirts are one of the coolest things. Ever. I would just die if my parents had saved concert shirts from back in the day, although I don’t think they were really the concert going types? There are a lot of cute reproduction versions on the market. Pro tip - search the men’s section (or even kids) versus women’s. See my recs above - all under $13 bucks!!

What:
Shades: Target
Tee: Paul McCartney Concert (same here)
Skirt: Target, older style (different style, but same vibe)

Also - Hi Felix! You’re such a big boy now! He’s slept in until 7am the past two mornings in a row and has to very well rested parents. Thanks kiddo! Whenever he sees the camera he makes a little “sshhh shhh” sound and today he wanted to be in my photos so we just went with it. He has very little laundry clean so no judgment on his kooky outfit today. Kids get a free pass for not matching, right? And if you think he looks tall - he is! He’s three feet even and above the 98 percentile!

WhatIWore: I’m a little sad to admit that feeling like I have nothing to wear has been a running theme the past few weeks (months?) I’m not as inspired by clothes as I used to be, but I’m just letting the phase do it’s thing and hope it will pass. That said, a girl’s still got to get dressed, right? I had bought a new dress yesterday and thought it would be awesome and when I put it on this morning I felt Amish. Not a great look (no offense to Amish style - I thought I wanted to be Amish when I was a little girl. I’ll save that story for another time).

Anyways… here’s another basic outfit. I was actually pleased when I finally arrived at this. And the new sunglasses give it an extra air of cool ($17 at Target) because God knows I need all the cool injections I can get these days (I feel like such a boring mom!) Nothing that a bright bag and pink wall can’t (temporarily?) fix! More outfit details below.
