Karen Walker 'Super Duper' in Crazy Tort Lands End Cream Aran Turtleneck Frye Fringe Bag

WhatIWore: Here’s what I wore for a morning stroll to the bagel shop and then a little time at the library with Felix. Normally I have a babysitter on Monday mornings, but she had to take the morning off, so it was just mommy and me time for us! I went with something I knew I could comfortably wear without a coat (it’s been so warm here!) and could walk a mile two and from downtown in. It’s kind of a 70s meets modern hybrid of an outfit. I’ll have to stop myself from just wearing a cream sweater every other day all winter (guilty as charged!)

My DIY | Cable Knit Trapper Hat

WhatIWore: Voila! I just finished my latest knitting project - a cable knit trapper hat! Knit in four major pieces, it took me a little under two weeks to knit, block and assemble.

This pattern is from the cover of VOGUEknitting 2010/2011 Winter issue. I used a pretty aran weight silk wool blend yarn. It was a lot more lofty than yarns I’ve knit in the past, but I love the final result.` I opted to do the majority of the work with 16″ round metal needles.  I used two skeins of Fyberspates Scrumptious Aran merino silk blend yarn in silver

As for the pattern - I stayed true to the instructions for the flaps and band, but made up my own design (five cables with a seed stitch between) for the crown of the hat and did an I-cord to connect the pom poms. I read a lot of reviews for this pattern on Ravelry (my profile here) and a lot of knitters said the hat was too tall, thus my change (I also tried the pattern design and didn’t love it/got messed up enough to rip out, so went with a simplified stitch). This hat took me about a week plus a couple days for blocking and assembling. I rip out a lot of my work so I would have likely been done sooner if I paid more attention while I was knitting (but ya know, #babylife).

Would I make this hat again? Yes! Especially with a DK weight yarn and smaller needles for a kid size. How cute would that be!?

WhatIWore: Halloween is one of my favorite holidays! I LOVE getting dressed up and doing wild hair and makeup. This year, Adam and I decided to put on our fanciest clothes - a vintage long tail tuxedo for him and my wedding gown for me! Death can’t part us! It’s a shame to let it just hang in the back of my closet for years until my kids as to play dress up in it! And let’s be real - wearing a wedding dress is fun! So many people slowed down on the street to wave where we took these photos and we got lots of friendly comments walking between drinks and dinner out on the town too! Everytime someone said “nice costumes!” I replied “just married!!!” It was a blast!

Here’s the breakdown of my costume:

Hair: On Halloween morning, I washed and set my hair in perm rods. A half an hour or so before we left for the night, I took them out, ran my fingers through them and used a half a bottle of hairspray. I pinned in ¾ yard of veiling, just using bobby pins.

Makeup: It took me over an hour to get this ghastly look! I started with cheap-o white grease makeup from the Halloween store and topped with baby powder (which yuck, I wouldn’t use normally, but for one night a year - whatever) all over my face, neck and chest. Next I did a purple shadow beneath my eyes and topped with a mix of black powder shadow and black cream liner. I mixed a purple lipstick with some of the black liner for my lips. Finally I did a slight bit of purple contouring on my cheeks. Voila!

Dress: As I mentioned above, I wore my actual wedding dress. Because I’ve had a baby and am still nursing, I had to adjust the fit, which I did by pinning in wide elastic to either side of the zipper. I made a matching off white lace jacket which I criss crossed and pinned to the front of the dress. I topped it off with a black sash that I also made for the costume.

Accessories: A bride can’t walk down the aisle without a bouquet! I found these faux flowers and greenery on clearance at Michaels, and along with a few twigs from the yard, sprayed ‘em black (but not all of the way… I liked the grayish-lavender blooms!) I called it my ‘spooky bouquet’ all night. I also wore opera length black gloves (from previous costumes) and a pearl necklace and earrings. I wore comfortable boots and socks underneath, as we did a lot of walking!

With the grandparents in town, we had the whole night to ourselves! We started off getting beers at The Tap and then walked up Kirkwood to one of our favorite restaurants, Finches. Lucky us, someone from the Jacobs School of Music was having a birthday party upstairs, so we had the loveliest string background music from world class musicians in the background. The meal was excellent! Afterwards we took an Uber to Cardinal Spirits and when the clock struck midnight (err… 10:30) we scooted back home to see our baby. Such an epic date night, which the handsomest of grooms!

Karen Walker Super Duper in Black

WhatIWore: After two days of gloominess and rain rain rain, I was excited to get up and get dressed this morning. I’ve been wearing these boots a lot - they’re surprisingly wearable with comfy sweaters or layered flannels and scarves. Next week I’m going to try them out with a skirt too!

I’ve been doing a ton of knitting lately and someday I hope to have shelves full of homemade sweaters, but this one is a piece I picked up from ModCloth in my last order. It was about 50 degrees out when Felix and I went for our walk this morning and layered with a thinner v-neck underneath, I was pretty comfy!
